The HSL card will no longer function as an access token on the Otaniemi campus 15.11.2024

At the Otaniemi campus, the HSL card will no longer be used as an access token starting on November 15, 2024. All individuals currently using the HSL card must switch to a new access token. We recommend adopting the Bitwards mobile app.

The HSL card will be deactivated and the access rights will be closed automatically. If you have a smartphone, setting up a mobile access token is easy, and you can find the instructions below.

You can also collect a physical access token from the lobby services at Väre or Otakaari 1 info. By registering the token, you will be able to access buildings on campus. This token will also be used temporarily as a printing card during the upcoming printing system update later this year.

Reason for phasing out HSL cards:

  • HSL cards are considered lower-security identifiers than mobile credentials and other access cards.
  • The new mobile credentials and access cards provide enhanced data security, a key objective of our update.
  • HSL also encourages using mobile applications to reduce the need for physical travel cards.
  • The HSL card will still function for lockers and public transportation, but it can no longer be used as an access token on campus.

Registration of the Bitwards Mobile ID

Before using the Bitwards mobile app, installation of the Authenticator app on your phone is required. For further information, please visit Multifactor Authentication (MFA, 2FA) | Aalto University The app is installed from the App Store or Google Play Store and requires a Bluetooth or NFC connection to function. Detailed instructions for registering and activating the Bitwards mobile token: Registration and activation of the Bitwards Mobile ID for students and staff | Aalto University

We continue to develop the mobile application in close collaboration with device and system providers. Regular updates are implemented for the software and reader devices, emphasizing providing a seamless user experience and maintaining high security.

Note! Access rights do not activate immediately; there’s a few hours delay before they become active.

Registration of an access token

You can collect a physical access token (e.g., a key fob or card) from the lobby services at Väre or Otakaari 1 info. The token can be registered at idm.aalto.fi. Log in with your Aalto credentials and enter the required information, such as your phone number and the access token number. For more information and detailed instructions, visit Registration and activation of the Bitwards Mobile ID for students and staff | Aalto University. After registration, you can use the access token to move around the campus.

Lockers

The HSL card can still be used to manage lockers. Lockers can be opened and closed using either an HSL card or an access token, as the system recognizes all RFID-equipped tags. The locker system operates independently, so changes in the use of access badges do not affect its functionality.
