Renovation of streets and changes to traffic arrangements in Otaniemi from March 2019 to June 2020 – Konemiehentie, Puumiehenkuja and Otakaari

Puumiehenkuja, Konemiehentie and Otakaari are streets at Otaniemi in the city of Espoo with municipal infrastructure largely dating from the 1960s–1970s.

Taking a little over a year, municipal infrastructure such as district heating pipelines, electric cables, water mains, sewers, and foundation and surface structures of the street, will be replaced on Konemiehentie, Puumiehenkuja and Otakaari. There will be changes to parking alongside the street. Bicycle and pedestrian routes and street lighting will be improved.

The first phase of construction will begin at the Maarintie section of Konemiehentie in March 2019, with completion scheduled by the end of June. Once the section of Konemiehentie and Puumiehenkuja facing the sea has been completed, construction will move to the second phase in late 2019, repairs of Puumiehenkuja on the Otakaari side and the front section of Otakaari all the way to A Grid. The work will be completed in June 2020. The base of the construction work is alongside Konemiehentie, on the parking lot at the end of Sähkömiehentie.

Driving to lots through the renovation area is allowed, but there will be momentary interruptions and the area will at times be covered with gravel and uneven. Pedestrian and bicycle routes will vary as work on the site proceeds. We will report on these specifically as the work proceeds. Users of the buildings will be specifically informed of other interruptions.

A temporary vehicle access will be opened from Maarintie to Otakaari.

During construction, Sähkömiehentie will be opened for traffic so it again provides access to Maarintalo, for instance. Likewise, a temporary vehicle access will be opened from Maarintie to Otakaari, in front of Väre, through Ainonaukio square. While the section of Puumiehenkuja on Otakaari’s side is under repair, vehicle traffic will be rerouted from Maarintie at Otakaari through Konemiehentie and Sähkömiehentie. Service traffic to buildings alongside street sections under repair will be secured. The dates of construction on Otakaari will be specified as the work proceeds.

The City of Espoo, Aalto University and Aalto CRE will hold regular meetings on the progress and schedule of the work. The goal is to match, e.g., research in the Nanotalo building that is disturbed by vibration and enable the smooth progress of construction, on the other hand. The aim is to reduce disruption to the operation of the University. These meetings will be attended by Timo Kajava and Kenrick Bingham from Aalto University School of Science (Nanotalo building) and by Panu Sainio from Aalto Unviersity School of Engineering.
